COWI and Swedish Biofuels to build factories for SAF production

Swedish Biofuels and COWI A/S, a Danish engineering consultancy, are forming an alliance in the biofuel sector. Specifically, they propose to build three SAF production plants supply the green fuel to the Swedish market.

According to their statements, the companies will develop the first SAF production plant in Brista. To be exact, this platform will be located near Arlanda Airport and Stockholm. Here, the aim is to supply 400,000 tons of SAF per year in Sweden. The first deliveries are scheduled for 2025.

Through production at the three new plants, the companies will be able to cover about 40% of Arlanda’s annual aviation fuel consumption.

Moreover, Swedish Biofuels’ AJT technology uses sustainable biomass to produce green fuels. Specifically, the process is based on green ethanol as feedstock, yet allows the use of green waste gases and hydrogen. Due to that, the production will result in excess heat, which will be sent to Stockholm Exergi’s adjacent combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

“Our technology enables the world’s first commercial production of a sustainable aviation fuel that requires no blending. We are confident that this will revolutionize the aviation sector, as this technology will spell the end of fossil fuels. The use of sustainable aviation fuel is not only a step towards a greener world; it also reduces our dependence on foreign oil, making us more self-sufficient,” commented Angelica Hull, CEO of Swedish Biofuels.
