Coca-Cola HBC Italy signs agreement to decarbonize transport emissions with hydrogen and biogas

Coca-Cola HBC Italia, The Coca-Cola Company’s main bottling company in the country, has announced an agreement with its main carriers (Italtrans, Number1, Casilli Enterprise and Favaro Servizi), energy transition advisor Ikigai Capital (IKIGAI) and green energy development company NVA. It aims to decarbonize its road transport operations as part of its net zero strategy for 2040.

The first phase of the project consists of a feasibility study regarding CCHBC’s road transport. This will enable the creation of alternative solutions that seek to achieve the zero-emission challenge. However, the final objective is to create a project for the procurement, investment and implementation of net-wax transport for vehicles, fuels and related infrastructure.

The project will be carried out by Ikigai together with NVA. Both will carry out a pilot project involving the creation of multi-fuel centers for the supply of green fuels (including electricity, biomethane and hydrogen). In addition, an ecosystem for the supply of zero-impact vehicles will be required.

On the other hand, stakeholder involvement is crucial, due to the number of challenges to decarbonize the road transport sector in Italy.

Manuel Biella, Supply Chain Director Italy, said, “We recognize the enormous challenges to achieve net zero emissions in the road transport sector, but we also know that change is needed now, and we want to lead the way. That is why Coca-Cola HBC Italy is committed to supporting this project and our hauliers on their decarbonization journey and to investing resources to lead the way and become an example for a sustainable logistics sector.”

Heavy road transport is one of the so-called “hard-to-reduce sectors”. Some challenges that make this sector one of the most difficult to decarbonize are the availability and cost of vehicles and fuel, but also the infrastructure network to support vehicle refueling.
