The Spanish strawberry campaign is already in its final stretch. This year started late due to the snowstorms and frosts in December and January, which caused very low yields during the first three months of the season.
As of the last week of April, the production curve began to flatten and, at the same time, the low temperatures in the rest of the European countries – to which Spain exports most of its production – notably delayed the start of its production. bells. This had positive consequences for Spanish exporters, who found a lot of space for their strawberries in Europe, registering a much higher demand than usual for that time of year.
Due to the cold snap in April and the first half of May, the German strawberry season got off to a slow start. At the moment there are mainly protected cultivation strawberries on the market. The first strawberries produced outdoors are arriving little by little. Despite the difficult start to the season, a normal harvest is expected, with volumes comparable to last year.
There is an excellent situation and good prospects for strawberries in northern Italy. An entrepreneur, who has more than 600,000 plants in production, says that in Emilia-Romagna 80% of the strawberries have been harvested in protected cultivation, while harvesting in the open field has just started. The quality is excellent. The volumes are adequate and the prices are good. Especially abroad, where there is not much Spanish product, prices remain high, around 1.50-1.80 euros per 500-gram container.
