Russia’s President Vladimir Putin proposed log export ban by Russia.
Although this prohibition is not yet executed as law, it is expected to start in 2022.
The 12% of globally traded roundwood in 2020 is from Russia 15 million square meter of logs.
But, if this regulation is implemented, these trade like the exportation of softwood logs and high-value hardwood logs from Russia will be prohibited.
Since exports of softwood logs mainly from Russia Far East are likely to be prohibited, the Chinese lumber industry will be most directly impacted.
According to a just-released study, Russian Log Export Ban in 2022 – Implications for the Global Forest Industry (LINK), China will probably look to source more sawlogs from other regions of the world, such as Oceania, Europe, and the US.
