Nearly 1.4 Mt of EU olive oil production in the first quarter of the season

Of this volume, up to the end of last year, 63.4% corresponded to Spanish olive oil production, which, after adding 530,228 t in December, rose to 867,727 tons. Another 264,454 t (19.3%) came from Italy, which added 103,801 t in the past month; 117,470 t (8.6%) from Greece, after adding 77,500 t; 112,080 t (8.2%) to Portugal, which added 44,880 t in December.

With lower volumes add Croatia, with 3,044 t, after adding 138 t in December; France, with 3,057, after adding 1,264 t and Slovenia, with 280 tons.

Olive oil production

The Commission maintains an estimated production for the 2021/22 campaign of 1,974,029 tons of olive oil, with which, according to this data, there would still be some 606,437 tons to be produced in these first months of the year in the EU-27 as a whole.

Of the expected volume, about 1.3 Mt, almost 66% of the total, would correspond to the Spanish olive oil production, followed by Italy, with 315,000 t (almost 16%), which would recover the second position relegating to third place to Greece, with 225,000 t (11.4%), followed by Portugal, with 120,000 t (7.2%); Cyprus (6,100 t); France (4,605 t); Croatia (3,044 t) and Slovenia (280 t).

Olive oil consumption

The estimated internal consumption in these main olive oil producing countries is 1,325,300 tons, of which almost 75% of the total would correspond to Spain and Italy, with 510,000 tons, respectively, each one, followed by Greece and France, with 110,000 tons, respectively; Portugal, with 70,000 tons; Croatia, 7,000 tons; Cyprus, 6,000 tons and Malta, with 200 tons.

Final olive oil stocks at 30 September 2022 are estimated at around 552,250 t, a figure that would also correspond to those remaining in the EU as a whole. Of this volume, 69.2% would be in Spain, with 382,100 t; another 29.5% in Italy, with 163,000 t and smaller quantities in Greece, with just 5,950 t, and France, with 1,200 tons.
