The Vilanova biowaste plant will be the latest to join those in Cervo (Lugo), Verín (Ourense) and Cerceda (A Coruña). The Pontevedra facility will be located in the industrial park of Vilanova de Arousa and will have a total of 20,000 square meters.
The objective of the Xunta de Galicia is that it will serve 26 municipalities with a population of 326,846 inhabitants. It will have a capacity to treat up to 15,000 tons per year of organic matter and another 7,000 tons of pruning and wood waste. In addition, it will produce around 6,000 tons per year of compost.
The industrial operation will be powered by renewable energy, mainly through solar panels.
The Xunta de Galicia, through the public company Sogama, has awarded the execution and start-up of a biowaste plant in the municipality of Vilanova de Arousa (Pontevedra) to the UTE (Unión Temporal de Empresas) 1) Cespa Compañía Española de Servicios Públicos Auxiliares, SA; 2) Arias Infraestruturas, SA; 3) Petrolam Infraestruturas, SL; 4) Prace, Servicios y Obras, SA; for an amount of 15,109,215 euros (VAT included).
The Vilanova facility is located in the Baión industrial estate, where Sogama has acquired seven plots of land. The facilities cover an area of 20,000 square meters and have involved an outlay of 1.5 million euros.
The Xunta reports that it will serve 26 municipalities with 326,846 inhabitants and will have the capacity to treat up to 15,000 tons per year of organic matter and another 7,000 tons of pruning and wood waste. In addition, it will produce around 6,000 tons per year of compost, which will be used in agriculture as a natural fertilizer, replacing artificial fertilizers.
Prontevedra bio-waste facility
The plant will also integrate the entire composting process of the waste received, which will be carried out in closed tanks, as well as the corresponding air and water treatments. In this way, the latest available technologies will be used at all times. The industrial operation will be powered by renewable energy, mainly through solar panels.
The facilities integrated in this network, to which a total investment of 38.6 million euros has been earmarked, are expected to come into operation at the end of this year. In this way, progress will be made towards meeting the European recycling targets for 2025.
In addition, the Vilanova biowaste plant, together with the Cervo (Lugo), Verín (Ourense) and Cerceda (A Coruña) plants -the latter already in operation- will be supported by 13 transfer plants. These will be equipped with a specific hopper for the transfer of organic matter. In total, there will be 17 facilities covering practically the entire Galician territory, allowing municipalities to have a biowaste or transfer plant less than 50 km away.
