With the Northern Hemisphere harvest complete, world nut production in the 2021/22 season is forecast at around 5 million tonnes of grain, with the exception of shelled pistachios. This is 8% less than in the previous 2020/21 season, according to the latest data from the International Nut & Dried Fruit (INC).
However, the increasing trend of the last decade is maintained above the volumes of the 2011/12 to 2019/20 seasons. Between 2011/12 and 2021/22, the production of nuts grew by 54%.
Despite the problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, consumer demand remained strong in the previous 2020/21 marketing year, and most dried fruit exports increased relative to the previous season and even reached a record in international shipments.
In the current season, global trade and transportation logistics disruptions are creating some shipping delays and short-term supply shortages, making it difficult to monitor and assess the market situation at this time.
In the United States, a shorter harvest is expected, with which the world production of almonds is expected to be lower than that of 2020/21, estimating by the INC just under 1.6 Mt, with a decrease of 8% and of almost 140,000 ton less.
Something similar is expected in the pistachio harvest, since the main producers, the United States, Iran and Turkey have had lower production due to the productive “rest” of their plantations, with which the total production is forecast by the INC also below the previous season. In figures, 729,300 tons are expected, no less than 31.1% and 329,400 tons below the harvest of the 2020/21 campaign.
Likewise, global walnut production is expected to end slightly below the levels reached in the previous 2020/21, as China expects an average harvest, while California’s is predicted shorter, following last season’s record. . A smaller harvest of Brazil nuts is also anticipated. In figures, the INC forecast is 984,925 tons, 2.12% and 21,325 tons less, estimating at 984,925 tons.
The harvests of cashew nuts (861,390 t and + 2.9%), hazelnuts (541,130 t and + 6.7%) and macadamias (66,345 t and + 5.3%) in the 2021/22 campaign are expected to end between 3% and 7% above last season’s productions, while the greatest increase was observed in pine nuts, with 43,810 tons (+ 27%), mainly due to higher harvests in China and Russia.
