Gold kiwis account for almost half of New Zealand’s fruit exports in 2021

New Zealand’s fruit exports remained relatively stable, taking into account a slight increase of 1.3% in November 2021 when compared to the same period last year. However, kiwifruit accounted for 71% ($2.8 billion) of the total value of fruit exports.

Likewise, golden kiwifruit accounted for $1.9 billion of exports. This represents 47% of the total value of fruit exports, while green kiwifruit exports were US$923 million. That is, 23% of the total.

Stats NZ’s director of international trade, Alasdair Allen, stated that as long as green kiwifruit continues to be in high demand, New Zealand growers will continue to plant more and more gold and red kiwifruit to capture a higher market value in both China and Japan.

In the past 2020 season, golden kiwifruit surpassed green kiwifruit in dollars and volume.

On the other hand, apple exports fell by 7.2% in value. The same was true for quantities, which were down 11% this season. The fruit accounted for 21% of exports, valued at US$843 million.
